AECI Moderfontein, South Africa

AECI

The Moderfontein plant had the largest coal fired urea and ammonia plant in the world as well as a nitric acid plant, two sulphuric acid plants and two concentration plants for the recovery of the acids. Besides fertilizers and explosives the plant also produced insecticides, cyanide, paints and chemicals. The plant had some of the largest commercial water circuits for steam generation and cooling on the African Continent. The project aim was to manage the water quality in, through, and out of the plant to meet strict operational and environmental standards.

Shongwe Sewerage Systems, South Africa

Shongwe Sewerage

This aid project was sponsored by donor funding. Shongwe is a very backward part of South Africa. Water borne disease is rampant and sanitation was non existent. The project involved community liaison, joint venturing with donors, and communities, and then installing and commissioning a sewerage system for a poverty stricken community.
